Zoar Valley future

So how about the presentation that was given at the Village Board meeting last month by a friend or member of the Nature Sanctuary Society of W.N.Y. where he is reported in the Gowanda Pennysaver to have stated the real reason why the new DEC Zoar Valley Wilderness Preservation Plans rules were put in place a few years ago- to keep people out of the 'wilderness' and return it to its' pristine state. I have heard that there is a similar movement by the Nature folks in regards to a popular creek over in Chatauqua County somewhere along the lake I believe. It's been awhile since I heard about this wilderness movement being led by some environmental organizations under a plan promoted by the United Nations that seeks to make large sections of mountainous areas and areas adjacent to forest parks and other areas offlimits to the public.

Bill Cain gave the presentation and some of his comments go a long way to confirm what I suspected a few years ago when I read some of the draft plans that were being posted.

I wonder how real the concern that the Wilderness Society professses for the Gowanda Fire Dept. over the rescue situations they have faced over the years really is? Didn't the fire dept. purchase a bunch of equipment a few years ago specifically for dealing with some of these types of situations?

Why did that poor group of hikers and their dogs hike over to the rockfall area where they got stranded last year anyway- you can't get there unless you are really trying? The shoreline adjacent to it is not very wide and the water is over waist deep to cross over to it when it is low water swimming conditions. If you were coming back downstream and couldn't wade across upstream of the rocks at the rapids where it is usually only a little over knee deep in the summer, and if you had made your way down to the rocks and figured out it was impassable why wouldn't you go back upstream to the large wooded area where you could go all the way over to and up the hillside if the water actually threatened you there. I know they said the water level was rising but I was a little suspicious of this event when it happened and made the news.

I could be wrong. But I remain highly suspicious.

BUT:

Buying local is a win-win situation. Give it a shot and you won't be let down.

To those of you in Gowanda who regularly supported our Restaurant I would like to sincerely thank you. We really gave it our best shot. Our family gave everything it had (literally) to bring something special to WNY and Gowanda. It is a real shame that it did not work out.

Is there anyone in Gowanda who is the Village historian? I remember reading about a park somewhere in Gowanda where people used to picnic in the 1800's...It stated that you must be willing to get wet....is that because you must cross water?? I like to hike and want to know where this place is located and also if there are any other places to hike besides the much dangerous Zoar Valley....I would really appreciate any info you have....and also, why can't I find a city street map of Gowanda...all the maps I have do not list all of the streets......There must be someone in this village who has a map that is willing to upload it on the Internet....... Against weather, controversy and set backs you believed in the cause and put forth your best efforts for our community. Be proud.

We encourage more people like you, especially those experienced with financing, fundraising and public relations, to become active year-round with the Hollywood Theater. Our role in the Harley Happening at the Hollywood is only one good example of what can be achieved when a community minded business puts forth their resources and staff to benefit the greater good of restoring our historical treasure and providing economic opportunities. Lets not let the enthusiasm for restoring the Hollywood Theater fade once the Harley Happening at the Hollywood is over. More can be done, if more are actively involved. For years I have thought gowanda has needed a community/recreation center for students and adults. I own the old printshop building at s water and walnut sts and think this would be an ideal location and building for such a center. What do you think? any comments -ideas

I own the old print shop property at 49 s water st. First let me apologize for the continuied unsightlyness of the place. When I bought it years ago, I had great plans for it as a community/recreation/entertainment center. alas due to the village government having other plans for their own center, nothing was ever done with mine. Unfortunately the village's plans fell thru and Gowanda still doesnt have a center for all to use and enjoy. THe village is after me to either fix-up the property or demolish it. It is still a very sound building and I still think it would make a great community center. Its large enough( 2 story with about 7000 sq feet and a basement) it is centrally located and easy to get to. The size of such a project is beyond my individual means but maybe if enough village residents support the idea of having a community center, a committee can be formed to explore the possibilities. I am looking for feedback from anyone who would support the idea and maybe be able to contribute , time, knowledge, labor, funding or ideas to make the dream a reality.
